SONNY BILL CONVERTS TO ISLAM

Sonny Bill Williams has announced that he has had a spiritual conversion to Islam. While rumours of the 25-year-old sporting superstar’s religious beliefs have circulated for some time, especially after he requested Jade Stadium be realigned to face Mecca, this is the first time this issue has been reported publically.

Williams conversion makes him the first Muslim to play for the All Blacks and All Black coach Graham Henry would not return our calls earlier today for his opinion. However, Henry is believed to be particularly concerned that the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when followers are forbidden from eating between dawn and sunset, falls in August this year – when the All Blacks play three Tri Nations matches. It is during the final build-up to the Rugby World Cup.

However, of greater concern is the name that Sonny Bill Williams may adopt as part of his new religion. When boxing great, Cassius Clay converted to Islam he changed his name to Muhammad Ali. At this stage it is believed that Williams may become Muhammad SBW or even the catchy Sonny Muhammad. This would pose a problem for the crusaders who like to have the names of their players on their backs and may force the t-shirt designers to start his name on the front and wrap around the back.

  1. good artice, hopefully he will see who Jesus really is and find him.

  2. May Jesus reveal himself to him

  3. may Allah bless him

  4. Seriously? May Jesus reveal himself to him? Its his religion dammit! If he wants to be a Muslim then neither of u have any right to comment!! As 4 the article, its extremely biased!
    Well done SBW 🙂

    • Hello Mish.

Firstly, I have no concern hat SBW has become a Muslim so well done to him.
Secondly, The article I have written is not biased, although some of the comments are one sided, but that is to be expected in a blog. That is also something that I think is important in a blog. Different opinions from different people.
Thirdly, I have a right to comment on whatever I please, this is the internet my friend. You have commented on this so topic – so do you live in a world where you can comment on things that you want to and other people have to be silent.

  5. From what I have understood of Sonny Bill’s conversion, Islam has allowed him to give up alcohol, instilled more discipline into his life and become a more respected figure among his peers and a model professional. It is great that someone like him may help the very narrow-minded views of many prejudiced people!

  6. SBW is the best inside centre in world rugby.i admire him for playing great rugby and welcome him as a muslim into this beautiful way of life(islam). Anybody with negative comments is jealous of him and his faith.

  7. Well said Yvette! Please shut up about the whole “hope Jesus reveals himself to him”. We all believe in the same God. Just different ways of practicing it and names. Please don’t be ignorant and judge(Smh). Everything written above Mish is absolute stupidity. Keep up the good work SBW. May you better yourself even more.

  8. Allaahu-akbar…May he be an inspiration to many…

  9. Melissa the last thing I want to do is turn this sports blog into a religion blog. However, your comment about all believeing in the same God is rubbish.

Christian doctrine says there is no other God so immediately that puts it at odds with other religions. They dont believe the same thing so how can they worsphi the same God.

On the other hand SBW is on fire at the moment. Standout player of the Super 15??? What do you think?

  10. You seem to misunderstand what Melissa has said….There can only be one supreme being that is all powerful, the creator, the merciful…..and all of us that believe in a God or a Allah we are all worshiping the same being….out methods might be wrong, our actions might be flawed, but there is still only one Supreme Being, and we well all be proven right/wrong when we die

  11. Sorry Laz, yes I did misunderstand what she was on about. what you have raised here is much different.

‘There can only be one supreme being that is all powerful, the creator, the merciful..’ immediatley this puts many religions at odds with one another, therefore how can we believe in the same god. Some believe that there are many Gods, while other believe there is only one true God. i

Surely if there was one supreme being there would be universal conistency in beliefs, customs and doctrine etc?? However, religions, especially the main ones differ so greatly your argument has too many flawes for my liking.

  12. Religion has soo many flaws because of man…..not because of religion, you assume that ” if there was one supreme being there would be universal conistency in beliefs” my thinking may be flawed or your thinking may be flawed, what it boils down to is the flaws of Humans….and not the flaws of a supreme being….some people do believe in many Deities you are right…..assigning different attributes to each….could it not be that they are flawed in their thinking? Refusing to believe that their is one being responsible for everything?

The point I raise does not question Religions but peoples thinking on Religion….one only has to look at the Abrahamic faiths( Islam/Judaism/Islam ) to see that something is not right…..they all have Holy books and in each of them are similar ideoligies…..is it possible that a Supreme being is responsible for them all? ……Is it probable that man has changed things to accomodate himself?

  13. may allah reward him abuntantly inshallah

  14. I am a muslim & I respect the beliefs & religions of others & it would be just great if we could all respect each other’s religious beliefs like the civilised humans we are supposed to be.

Sonny Bill Williams is welcome in Cape Town at all times.
Well done my brother in Islam, may you always be happy & be surrounded with love.

    Fee Ama Nillah!

  16. Zee Vato Locos

Hi think he is a great player and can only get better as he learns more about rugby itself….what makes him a great player is his character towards people and his humbleness….and i think because of his personality he will still achieve many things in life thats good for him.

  17. Zee Vato Locos

dont judge people by there religion but the talent that was given to them, may he grow from strength to strenght…

  18. A MOSLEM CRUSADER! WHO WOULD OF THUNK. MAYBE HE SHOULD MOVE TO SARACENS.

  19. Well done mate (SBW) have faith and god will set you free! There like heaps hate you coz your muslim but we here in fiji were happy! Good luck for the world cup! May ALLAH Bless You

  20. What rubbish….having to print his “name” from front to back on the All Black Jersey! The name Sonny Bill Williams have more characters in it than Sonny Muhammad. If he was to insist on using the Arabic lettering, then it would have been a point to raise.

Its a shame that so-called intelligent people can make utterly stupid arguments. Who says sport and especially rugby, belongs to a particular faith!

The writer is typical of man’s nature. Create mischief and division, and see how the ignorant will follow.

Apparently, SBW embraced Islam, the day after osama bin laden was reported killed by the “infidels”(for the second time) in Tora Bora. He was inspired by this man, as his “saviour”. It has also been reported that SBW has said that as Jesus’s resurrection is still clouded in controversy, that a true resurrection has occurred during his lifetime.
How can he be misguided? It was all in the news that bin laden was killed in Dec 2001, and then again on that fateful day in 2008.

However, we have not heard of SBW reaction after 2011 killing of osama bin laden- this time in Pakistan.

Perhaps, he’ll change his name to Osonny bi(ll)n Williams!!

  21. I salute you SBW,my brother. We accept you with open arms in Islam.
We’ve got a lot of muslims playing rugby here in Cape Town and we will support you all the way like we support The All Blacks.

  22. It is sad that we have to go at it with words about religion. The Supreme being the One who created Adam and Eve, the heavens the earth and the whole universe and all that surrounds us. We are people of the book that is the books of God in all its authenticity and at the end only the one True God The one most merciful and all forgiving of his subjects will determine the worthiness of every individual. And in choice we were given amongst all creation this honour to choose what we prefer to be the better way of life suitable for our peace of mind and betterment of the self as this is our ultimate struggle through the passing here, our short time walking this earth as God has promised us eternal life in the life after death. SBW have been revealed the truth and guided to Islam which means Peace he understand Islam in its simplicity without culture, Bin Ladens and propaganda attached with conviction he realises that there is only one true God no one Worthy of worship Except Him! With No Partners!

  23. faiza and tasneem

Muslims have to deal with prejudice comments every day its nothing new but no matter what we just have to stick together.love u sbw and u’l always have our support

  24. SBW – you will end up as Cassius Clay, seems you like that anyway, so go ahead man

  25. Sonny is free to become a muslim or whatever he may want to be, but would like to know whether he was ever a christian. Choosing Mohammed for Jesus Christ is most shocking.

  26. This is all a load of hogwash.
There is no allah, God, Santa, Tooth Fairy….although plenty of faries…
Jesus was a decent bloke although a bit deluded, Mohammad was a hypocryte and Buddha was fat.
Can we just get on with football

  27. John, you need to rethink about what you said mate because out of all the stupid comments yours was the worst one of them all. We all have a religion of some sort and we all should respect one another’s religious views. however if you dont believe in anything, then you have the right to be quite. i just want to know how can you compare God to the tooth fairy??

And Mr Ozy, can you explain why you have placed osama bin ladin’s beard over Sonnys face?

well allow me to clear it out for you. Islam is a religion, Osama bin ladin is a person. So dont be a child and put them together. you call your self a sport reporter ????

Sonny Bill William may Allah be with you and bless you in every step you take. Win it for us baby and keep your head held high.

  28. John ibrahim….If you do not have anything intelligent to say, then best not say anything at all!

  29. John Ibrahim, which bit of Christ life was the good and which was the deluded parts. Or do you take a pick and mix approach to your beliefs?

  30. Mystery, thanks for your comment. Yes, as you say I am one of the world’s best reporters and therefore I will explain why I have used Osama’s beard on Sonny. It all comes down to cheek bone alignment and facial structure. When I was searching for the perfect Islamic facial beard I tried many but they didn’t fit Sonny’s strong cheek bone lines. However as fate would have it Osama’s fitted perfectly. There is no hidden agenda, no deep religious meaning just the Sonny and Osama have the same cheek bone alignment. I hope this clears up any confusion.

  31. He Who Must Not Be Named

I acknowledge Sonny Bill Williams’ acceptence of Islam, mashallah. But what I have trouble understanding is why people decide to create controversy over something that happens everyday. Everyday people are converting from one faith to another, but just because someone famous has decided to practice another religion, and that religion being Islam, people feel a need to argue and say that he has ‘made a bad decision”. If a young man decided to become a Christian would people question his decision, would they have ignorant remarks lingering in their minds?

People need to understand that he is still a human being (whether he’s a famous sportsman or not) and has every right to do what he wants without people criticizing his every move. Ozy Mandias you have written an interesting article but I hope that in the future you will focus on the larger issue rather than a name not fitting onto a jersey, thank you.

  32. what is the problem with sonny bill williams being a muslim mashallah he is a great man he prays at the mosque beside my dad so im pleased he is a verry strong guy.well done

  33. yeah a bit ironic wouldn’t you say, a Muslim playing for the Crusaders.

  34. MR OZY, WE ACTUALLY HATE YOU FOR JUDGING HIS RELIGION! THAT IS VERY UN-RESPECTFUL AND ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE!!!!THAT IS WHAT MAKING YOU SUCH A STUPID REPORTER! NO MATTER WHICH RELIGION HE BELIEVES IN, HE IS AN AWESOME PLAYER SO LEAVE HIM ALONE, DON’T TRY CHANGE THIS ONE. AND STOP EDITING THIS STUPID PHOTOSHOP STUFF, ISLAM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEARDS, ITS NOT THEIR MOST IMPORTANT RULES TO GROW ONE AND I MEAN WHAT’S WRONG OF HAVING BEARD ANYWAY?! WE ARE MEN WE GET BEARDS AS WELL, THATS NORMAL LIFE CYCLE, YOUR RESPOND ABOUT IT ISN’T THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION SO IM GUESSING YOU JUST DOING THIS FOR FUN, EH? WHY DON’T YOU PHOTOSHOP YOURSELF WITH BIN LADENS BEARD INSTEAD! REMEMBER WE ARE DIFFERENT, WE BELIEVE IN DIFFERENT RELIGION AND EVERYONE SHOULD RESPECT HIS RELIGION OUTSIDE THE GAME SO STOP JUDGING ACT LIKE YOU ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE! SO THINK TWICE! THANK YOU!

    • Hello Sa

      Thanks for your comment.
I have never judged SBW and his religion. What I do with this blog is select a small aspect of a sport, event or a person and focus on that. At no time have I ever made judging comments about SBW and his religion. That has come from other people’s comments.
I agree he is an awesome player and great athlete and I am one of his greatest fans.
I am sorry if my bearded images have caused offense. Some of New Zealand’s great civil servants of the 70’s and 80’s had beards and they therefore play an important part of our country’s history so they hold a special part in my life as well.
Finally I have never said that I am better than everyone else. Apart from writing, editing and organising the World’s Greatest sport blog I am a complete idiot, just ask my wife.

  35. hi ozy,
didnt find your comment about SBW judgemental.
pity some people dont appear to read stuff carefully.
I dont hate islam, just disagree with some of thier ideas I let them do what they want to do 🙂
i like to share my opinions about stuff
    cheers saint 🙂

  36. i am a muslim and extremely proud of it.i feel that everyones views on sbw are changing simply because of his religion, islam.one should not judge others on their choice of faith.people who have got rude and disrespectful comments on sbw and mostly his religion should rather just be quiet because most of you no absolutely nothing about islam.PRACTICE BEFORE YOU PREACH!!!!!

  37. As a muslim I believe in Jesus, Peace be upon him(PBUH), as a prophet. However from a muslim perspective Jesus(PBUH) status is not raised to divinity.Nor do muslims believe Jesus was crucified, died for mankind sins and resurrected.

I am in the UK and am currently following the Rugby world cup.I am really glad for SBW that he has become a muslim. May Allah bless him.I now hope AB’s win and SBW scores lots of tries (well England are already out).

  38. Truth stands clear from error.

  39. SBW is an amazing sportsman with many talents. It takes a lot of dedication and discipline to reach such a strong physical and mental state. Two thumbs up to him for being a role model on and off the field.

Regarding his choice of faith, I welcome him to this beautiful religion. May Allah Almighty grant him sustanance and strength, to help the All Blacks win the World Cup.

Greetings all the way from the Rainbow Nation – South Africa!

  40. Hi Ozy can u please take this picture of SBW off since some people find it offensive.. Thank u

  41. It’s okay if he is a Muslim.
As far as I know, when someone converted to Islam, it is not compulsory to change his name.
He can choose to maintain his famous and cute name SBW as long as the name has good meaning which I believe it did.
So, shouldn’t be a problem then.

  42. The pic is pretty funny.. but gud on SBW..

  43. alhamdulillah…all praise to Allah…may he will be rewarded with jannah…insha Allah

  44. well done sonny bill williams for converting
mot only sonny bill converts but an average of 5000 people will convert to islam every day around the world its a gods message that will go threw no matter how much haters r out there they cant stop that im a muslim and i ,ove every one that respects me islam tells to respect all religions .

  45. peace to all people no matter where they r from and what religion they r and for the guy named jhon ibrahim u r wrong muhamed was not a hypocrite if u ask christian scholars they will tell u how good he was of a man
islam is the fastest growing religion in da world and it will be the biggest in 20 years time
    by birth and conversian
