WEARING THE SAME UNDIES FOR A YEAR – UPDATE

I started this year with the goal of wearing the same undies for an entire year. As today is the 1st December I thought it was about time for an update. According to my calculations I have 30 days or 867 hours left in my little black  friends. I am in the final month of what has been a rather long campaign. In some ways I feel the same as Sir Edmund Hilary must have as he made those final steps towards the summit of Mount Everest – a goal that seemed so far away, so distant, was now within reach.

The last few months have been fantastic. The warmer weather has kicked in and it has been a blessing and my boys have certainly enjoyed the freedom of having an ‘indoor/outdoor’ flow.  The colder winter months were hard work on many fronts. My thin silky pair of boxers provided little warmth and drying them in a night proved difficult at times. Without getting graphic wet underwear in the BOP is a recipe for fungal growth. However, I can recommend ‘ Micreme’ for any readers who may be suffering the same symptoms. However, I battled through this problem and managed to make it through a chilly Spring and into the warmth of Summer.

You are probably all wondering how the boxers are looking. I would provide a picture, but everytime I take them off my wife seems it necessary to wash them. Perhaps that gives you an idea of their state!!! I would be the first to admit there is a lingering smell but this is something I have actually grown accustom to over the last couple of months.

Wear and tear has been an issue over the last couple of months. Two large holes developed around the crutch, and as these have expanded my boxers have essentially become crutch less. The stitching has also started to come away around the back, although with only about 5 weeks left I think they will hold out.

While most people in my position would be looking forward the the 1st Jan 2011 I am actually looking forward. The last three years have seen me write a blog, use the same razor for a year and now wear the same undies for a year. What next you may ask? Well I have had a couple of ideas but I would like you , the reader of Ozy Mandias Warning to come up with my challenge for 2011. So write your ideas below and I will choose the best.

My only rule is the following – If I choose your task, you either have to do the task with me or pay $50 to  the charity of your choice if I succeed.

2010 Undie Challenge – Half way there!!!

Tomorrow marks an important day for me and for you. Tomorrow is the 30th June which is effectively the middle of the year and for those that are regular readers of this blog will realise that I am now half way through my yearly challenge. Last year the challenge was one razor for the year which I achieved with ease. This year the challenge is one pair of undies for the year. Happily I can report things are going well.

So far things have been going swimmingly in respect to my personal aim. My Warehouse boxers are still holding up, although they are showing initial signs of wear and tear. The sexy bow, as Mrs Mandias likes to call it, is still intact but both buttons at the front have now gone. Construction wise, the seams are beginning to stretch around the groin area, although I don’t think this will be a long term problem.  The elastic is holding strong which had been an area I was concerned about prior to taking on this challenge. So on the equipment front we have no problems.

One of the questions I am constantly asked is how often do I wash them? Well my longest stretch without washing them is probably about 4 or 5 days. However, washing is  a very broad term. They have not had a proper machine wash now for over 3 months as it just causes too much problems. The last time they were washed by machine I had to go commando all day because Mrs Mandias decided they needed a wash. Needless to say I was not in a great mood that day.

Although the equipment is up to stratch there is more to this kind of challenge then just the gear. To complete such a task requires just a little foresite and organisation. Thankfully I am blessed in both these departments.  Basically I have a nightly ritual which involves a little soupy water and the hot water cupboard, although I would have to say that during the winter months it is hard work to wash and dry them every night. I wash them well, rinse them and then leave them to dry in the hot water cupboard. Then when morning comes I have a warm, clean pair of boxers waiting for me.

So tomorrow I turn for home in my personal challenge. I am at the halfway point of my personal battle, 21km into a 42km marathon, if you like. Being a running I know that this means the worst is yet to come. The first half is just the warm up and I am not expecting an easy ride in the weeks and months to come. Don’t worry though I will keep you updated and informed on my progress.

New Year’s Resolution – 100 days gone

Firstly, let’s start with a question. How many people have not broken their New Years resolutions for this year? Chances are that within such a large readership of mine, this will be a small number. That is because most people don’t have much staying power or commitment. Not Me. Happily I can confirm that my New Year’s resolution is still undefeated and getting stronger by the day (smell that is). For those new to this blog, my goal for 2010 is to wear the same pair of underwear for 365 days in a row. Tomorrow, the 10th April, is the 100 day of the year and therefore the 100th day I have worn the same pair of underwear.

I must admit that things have not been as easy as you may think. On day three, I lost one of the buttons on the front and then it accidental fell down the plug hole after a poor effort from me sewing it back on. If you click on the link above you will see that there are two buttons on the front. The second one is hanging on by a single tread. Fortunately they are just ornamental buttons and serve no function. Apart from this small mishap the only other problem has been the heat. Lets me honest, boxes in the summer can be sticky, sweaty affairs. Unfortunately, both in the BOP and my nether regions it has been a particularly hot summer and there were a couple of days when I had to go commando just to give my ‘lads’ an afternoon rest. Those days are thankfully passed and with daylight savings, cooler temperatures and winter approaching, the last month have been particularly comfortable. Although I am a little worried about the depths of winter. Will I get too cold???

In reflection the last 100 days have been a real learning curve for me. I have learnt that in order to pull off a goal of this magnitude you have to be organised. In fact organisation is the key to a stunt of this kind. Every evening, I have been washing my boxes and hanging them on the shower door. Miss a couple of evenings for what ever reason and you get behind and end up having to wear your boxes for a few days without a wash. Not the end of the world but certainly not pleasant. I have also learnt that life is so much simpler with one pair of undies. Holidays, weekends away are easy to pack for and the room I now have in my undie drawer has been a welcome relief. Perhaps next year it could be one pair of undies, one shirt and one pair of shorts.

Let’s hope the next 100 days go this well.
