WEEKLY SPORTS REVIEW – CHELSEA WIN DOUBLE

RUGBY – So the Super 14 round robin has been completed and the Bulls, Stormer, Crusaders and the Waratahs are the four to make it into the semi finals. They say that the table at the end of the season never lies. Unfortunately this is true for the New Zealand teams who have been slightly disappointing, especially last years finalists the Chiefs. Being a one eyed Crusaders man I am going for a Crusaders victory and the Stormers to be upset by the Waratahs. The Bulls are not playing at their real home ground and the Crusaders look the stronger team last weekend and have only got better. My second prediction is more out of hate for the SA teams than a realistic prediction.

FOOTBALL –FA cup weekend and the Chelsea machine rolled on with a 1-0 over the cash strapped Portsmouth. Chelsea hit the woodwork 5 times in the first half and Portsmouth missed a penalty before a Drogba screamer got the first and only goal of the game. Lampard warmed up for the England semi final penalty exit at the approaching World Cup with a penalty miss in the 89th minute.

CRICKET – England South Africa B won the T20 World Cup with a comprehensive victory over the Aussies. The Australian batters failed again and the EnglandSouth African B team deserved their win with a solid tournament. The New Zealand women’s team mad it through to their perspective final but dipped out to the Aussie while only chasing 108. Batting of the tournament must go to Michael Hussey who hit a mammoth 60 off just 24 balls to see Aussie through to the final.

With the Crusaders playing this week lets look at what makes this team so good.

In the 21st century, cricket has been emphatically a batsman’s game. It was not always thus. At the end of the 20th century, England’s besieged batsmen had to put up with all sorts: finger-crunching pitches, boomeranging deliveries, great vengeance and furious anger, and Shane Keith Warne.

Whatever happens in South Africa this summer, it does not have a prayer of exceeding the drama of the astonishing World Cup final of 1950.

WEEKLY SPORTS REVIEW – Ticker 09/10 Manager of the Year

RUGBY – With one round left the Super 14 season is really hotting up. Despite the Crusaders being robbed by the ref and the Reds running out of steam in the second half, bothare still in the running for finals position. Basically there are 6 teams left in the race for the final four and those six are all playing each other this week. My prediction is for both kiwi teams to win and the Stormers to win to basically shut the gate on the Aussie teams. This would be nice as all we have heard this year is how good the Aussie teams are. But as you can see when the pressure is applied and the games become more forward dominated the Aussie teams have little in the tank. Also have to laugh at the Reds. After such an ‘excellent’ season they sit 2 points above the pathetic Blues. So much for an Aussie renaissance.

LEAGUE – If the ref for the Crusaders was bad the one they got for the Kiwi v Kangaroos was a shocker. To his credit he wasn’t as one sided as the Jonker from SA but he was a shocker nonetheless. Ultimately it didn’t really matter. The conditions leveled the playing field a bit and meant for a great game. Bit of a shame the the international caused the Dragons v Manly game to be a non event. This would usually be one of the games of the season and was instead swamp by representative games.

FOOTBALL –Blue is the colour and football is the game for this years Premiership. Man Utd hoped for a Wigan upset away from home but it was all one way traffic with a comprehensive 8-0 victory. Man UTd finished strongly with a 4-0 win over Stoke. Tottenham were still in party mode against relegated Burnleyand Liverpool ended their season and their managers career with a hard earned 0-0 draw at Hull.

The big result over the weekend was the conclusion of the Ozy Mandias Fantasy Football League. Three top class managers assembled strong teams for the 38 week competition. Ultimately, it was Ausse ‘Ticker’ who came through and won. Taking the lead in week 37 and hanging on for dear life.

The competition was broken into three stages

Section 1 – Game Week 1 – Game Week 13   –  Ollys Wallys 683  The Ticker 660   OzyMandias 584
Section 2 – Game Week 14 – Game Week 26  – Ozy Mandias 696 (1280)  Ticker 625 (1285)  Olly’s Wallys 610 (1293)
Section 3 – Game Week 27 – Game Week 38 – Ticker 769 (2054) Ollys Wallys  731 (2024) Ozy Mandias 517 (1797)

This means that each manager won an individual section but it was Ticker who came through in the end to steal the money. Typical Aussie. Rest assured planning is already well under way for next years competition.

CRICKET – New Zealand kept their hopes alive with a one run victory over Pakistan and must beat England in their next game to progress. The English have looked rather solid in this tournament and along with the Aussie look like the teams to avoid. However, it is all just a lottery and it is a shame how cricket has now been reduced to a couple of slogs to determine the winner.

WEEKLY SPORTS REVIEW – Russians snooker Higgins

RUGBY – Well another interesting week in the Rebel Sport Super 14. The Highlanders finally got a decent win and the Hurricanes started their run to the finals. I predict the Hurricanes will make the finals with a splendid late surge. The Crusaders lost to the Stormer and face another mountain against the Bulls this weekend, which I cant see them winning. The Reds failed against the Brumbies and it will be interesting to see how they respond away to the Canes next weekend.

LEAGUE  – Warriors lost a game they should have won and 1/3 through the season a top 8 has almost emerged on the table. The Raiders are hardly one of the great sides and that is now three on the trot for the New Zealand team. The bye this week will help some players recover from injury but it is a long road to the finals again this year. With the bye comes the Aussie v Kiwi Test match. With so many injuries to the Kiwis I think it will be ‘damage minimalisation’ the order of the day.

WEEKLY SPORTS REVIEW – Storm Warning

RUGBY – Well another disappointing weekend for New Zealand teams. The upset of the round had to be the Crusaders losing to The Force and making their semi final hopes look a little shaky with a tough road trip to South Africa to come. The Hurricanes overcame a gutsy Highlanders team, with the help of the ref, to keep their hopes of a final four still alive. The Chiefsand the Blues had weekends to forget and their loses leave them both stranded mid table.  As you would expect the Bulls had an easy win over the Lion to almost cement a semi final position.

LEAGUE –The big story this week was the salary cap with the Melbourne Storm. The storm were found to have been paying players behind the books, effectively cheating. As you would expect everyone is ducking for cover and the punishment of a fine and loss of points for the rest of the season has been criticised in some areas. I have no sympathy for th Storm. they broke the rules and should have to pay the price. Incidentally, this didn’t stop the Storm hammering the woeful Warriors who are starting to feel their injuries and lack of cover in some areas.

ATHLETICS – Ethiopia’s Tsegaye Kebede won the London Marathon, finishing over a minute clear of Kenya’s Emmanuel Mutai as world champion Abel Kiruiwas fifth. His time of 2:05 was rather quick.

WEEKLY SPORTS REVIEW – Spurs on the Brink

RUGBY – Well another good weekend of rugby passes with slightly better results for the New Zealand teams. The Chiefs didn’t get the NZ teams off to the best start being demolished at their home ground by the inform Stormers. However, the Hurricanes, Blues both notched up good wins to leave them all in with a shout for a semi final sport, if only by  a thread. At the top of the table the Crusaders won easily with Bowden replacing Carter and performing well and the Reds upsetting the Bulls at home. The Bulls v Reds game was a classic with the Reds playing with pace and power to overcome a tired looking Bulls team. Have they peaked to early. Most talk back callers today were talking up the Aussies and SA national teams after last nights game but as a true AB man I felt the game showed a few things. Firstly, to beat those big SA teams you have play a high tempo game with pace. If you do that they look average. To beat the Aussies you have to play a tighter game for position and territory. I feel that the AB team is probably the only team that is able to play both styles. However, our tight game isn’t as good as SA and our tempo game isn’t better than Aussies. However, if we can develop a game plan for each of those opponents we will always have a shout.

LEAGUE – The Warriors payed dearly for an average first half performance to go down to the impressive Panthers. Coming into the sheds at 22-0 is not the best and the slight earth movement you heard around 3pm was not a earthquake but Cleary giving his team the halftime talk. In victorious teams include the Buldogs, St George, Knights, Roosters, Broncos and the Eels.

FOOTBALL Another great week of football action with Tottenham causing the upset of the round to beat Chelsea 2-1 at White Heart Lane. Chelsea used to call Tottenham’s stadium Three Point Lane but they were completely outplayed by Spurs who now occupy 4th on the ladder. The only other match of note was the Man City v Man Utd game. Man U did what they do best and scored the winner in the 90 something minute from a Paul Scholes header. Arsenal dented their hopes with a 3-2 loss to Wigan after leading 2-0 with ten minutes to go. For all Premiership fans the TVNZ site is a ripper for keeping up with the action. Try it out here.

CRICKETExplosive weekend in more way then one. The cricket continues as the people of India want to blow themselves up. From an arm chair view here in NZ it does seem a little ironic that the tournament hasn’t been stopped. Let me tell you if this was the Black Caps in Sri Lanka or Pakistan the players wouldbe on a flight quicker than it takes for a vindaloo curry to exit your system. Could it be the money?? I think so.

WEEKLY SPORTS REVIEW – Warriors shine

RUGBY – Basically an average weekend for all New Zealand teams in the Super 14. Apart from the Highlanders winnning on Friday evening it was pretty much doom and gloom without the consistency of the Crusaders to balance NZ rugby. The Chiefs lost against the Brumbies and the Hurricanes had a brain explosion to lose to the Sharks at home. Even I, with my only rugby experience coming at U15B level for Nelson College, know that playing running rugby in the final ten minutes in your own half is suicide. And if that wasn’t bad enough a look at the points  table is furhter sad reading for New Zealand rugby. Three of the top 6 are Aussie sides and two are South African. For me the real problems are with our number 10’s. Take away Carter and we have nobody able to control a game in NZ.  SUPER 14 WEBSITE

LEAGUE Warriors! Warriors! Performance of the season for the boys from Auckland. Brisbane in Brisbane is one of the toughest assignments in sport and the Warriors were brilliant. After missing the first half I settled in and watched vintage Warriors play – offloads and razzle dazzle from their own try line. The final score was an emphatic 48-16. My concern is where do the Warriors go from here. It will be tough to beat a performnace like that over the remaining season. Have they peaked to early. NRL WEBSITE.

FOOTBALL Chelsea were the big winners this week with a 7-1 thrashing of the usually solid Villa. At the top end of the table Man Utd stay top with a 4-0 while Chelsea’s result pushes them to 2 place. Liverpools win keeps them in the hunt with Torres scoring goal of the season. Arsenal slipped up at the solid Birmingham with a draw and Spurs cruised to a 2-0 victory against Pomey to hold 4th place. At the other end of the table Hull recorded a 2-0 home win against Fulham and with West Ham losing it is starting to congest at the bottom of the table. I think you’ve still got 7 teams all capable of dropping points and therefore going down. PREMIER LEAGUE WEBSITE

CRICKET Highlight of the weekend was Ross Taylor’s demolition of the Aussie attack to record the quickest 100 by a Black Caps. Despite this fantatsic personal achievement it was business as usual with the Black Caps batters unable to bat for a day and ram home the advantage developed by the bowlers. Australia then controlled day 3 to seat in the box seat. Another highlight for me was Hauritz going for 25 of one over, a new Australian record for the most runs conceeded. CRIC INFO WEBSITE

We also had the IPL competition contiued without much interest from me. At the wrong time and too many Indian players I have never heard of. IPL WEBSITE

Finally defending champion Jenson Button clinched his first victory of 2010 – and his first for McLaren – in Australia on Sunday. An excellent call on tyre strategy, wehile Hamilton was to worried about a recent speeding fine, meant it was all to easy for the Brit. link
